You may get tempted to take a dive into the clouds to swim into the valley that is deep in green and blue. But will be thrown back by the breeze coming right out of the chilled valley filled with a lovely mix of mist whites and trees evergreen.

You may want to sit below a blasting water fall or surf along a white water rapid.

May want to run, sing and dance up the hill on the lush green

It’s very hard to restrict oneself from going outdoors when its raining. And especially when out where the nature is now at its best.

 

But before we take-up this wonderful dream monsoon adventure; we should wakeup and come back to ground reality to ensure that the experience remains good, happy and without any un-wanted incident.

 

When you are on an out door event and plan to spend whole day or more than a day you may need to prepare accordingly:

 

Out Doors Facts during Monsoon:

 

It may be raining few hours or for the whole day (so prepare accordingly).

Sometimes there may even be thunder storm

You may be climbing up a mountain that is steep or traversing with one side with Rock face on one side and steep valley on the other side with potential of falling rocks.

Rock may be slippery

There may me mosquitoes or other biting insects along with the greenery

 

Check list and preparation

 

Attire

Light weight track pants / tights that will dry quickly once wet or loose comfortable trousers; Preference is for trousers whose material is light and can stretch. Avoid heavy jeans. You may also wear a Gaiters near your ankles this will prevent your trousers from getting wet due to wet grass and also help you against snake / insect bytes.

 

Always carry a light weight (Shorts or

Capri).


Wear loose full sleeves shirt or t-shirt of material that can breath, but does not retain liquid. (Wearing thin hosiery material banyans or slips under your shirt / t-shirt is recommended). Carry 1 pair of spare shirts / t-shirts.


Cap or hat with good shade (Remember when it is not raining it can get warm and sunny)


Shoes – trekking shoes or touch sports a shoe that has a good grip in monsoon. Avoid shoes with high heals or very thick soft rubber sole.


Carry Spare floaters, slippers, or light canvas shoes.


Socks – carry one pairs of spare socks.

Rain Wear:

 

Best rain wear for monsoon is Poncho (A kind of raincoat that can also cover your backpack). If you do not have Poncho a Rain Coat would do.

 

Rain Hat or Cap with Shade

 

If you plan to take lots of pictures kindly also carry a folding umbrella to protect your camera while taking pictures in rain. This will also be handy if you plan to have your meal while it is raining.

 


Personal medical Kit and Toiletries

1) Velbet Skin cream for ticks or insect bytes
2) Bettnovet – C “Anti Fungal Skin cream”
3) Bandages - Band aid, Crape Bandage, Gauze
4) Anti-septic cream – Soframycine and Burnol
5) Paracitimol – Crocin
6) Anti-Dyheration - Glucose D/C and Electrol
7) Anti Vomit / loose motions, Anti – Allergies (optional),
8) Mosquito / Insect repellent
9) Pain killers and / or any other personal medication recommended by your family doctor.

Your medical Kit should contain your blood group and emergency phone number.

 

General medical kit will be available with Nature Knights.

Other essentials in your survival kit

1) 2 meter x 2 meter light weight plastic sheet (will be available in any hardware store or market).
2) Hand Sanitizer
3) Torch
4) Pocket Knife
5) Towel (light)
6) Small Plate
7) Mug (Optional)
8) Thread and Needle (Carry one large needle and one small needle)
9) Walking Cane (should be 65% to 70% of your height – strong and light); helpful while climbing hills.
10) 3 liters wate.
11) Snacks for the route – Dry Fruits; Fruits; Salad Items; chocolates; biscuits etc.
12) Lunch and Breakfast – Options (Bread Indian or white; Vegetables home cooked or canned; Idlis; Boiled Eggs; Theplas; Chatni; Puran Polli; etc).
13) Basic Magnetic compass
14) Carry a note pad and two ball pens for your diary writing.

Backpack or Rucksack

Before you pack your items in your bag; stuff all of them in small plastic or water proof bags.

 

Carry all your belongings in a backpack or rucksack with light items at the bottom and top. Heavy items loaded around your shoulders and closer to your back. If you have, compression straps in your bag use them to compress your luggage to make it well balanced.


Nice to have


You may also carry goodies like camera; small - binoculars, magnifying glasses and pocket field guide to make most of the trip. Carry all your electronic items in water proof bags / Plastics.

 

Other Notes:

 

Out door adventure like treks; expeditions are team events. You and your team mates are out in the wild or remote country location on your own.  All qualities of team work comes into play. In times of any crises; trust your group leaders for decision making.
